The 3rd album closed on “the escape was fully packed, and I didn’t leave.” The 4th opens on the night after — a phone call that stays connected with nothing left to say. “Should we sleep soon?” said three times; three times, nobody hangs up.
The scene it came from
The sound of teeth being brushed, of running water — the sounds of a life you never needed to know, arriving through the receiver, and being glad to know them. The battery hits ten percent and still nobody hangs up. The 4th album’s fear already shows its shape here: getting used to this is a little frightening.
Sound notes
84 BPM, E-flat minor. The track with the least percussion on the record. In its place, a phone-line hiss runs under the whole song — the sensation of a call staying connected, used as an instrument. As long as the noise doesn’t cut out, neither do they.
