Behind the Track (SHINYA AFTER 1st) #3 — Half Asleep

The blurriest track on the record, and the one where the coat first appears.

The scene it came from

Not asleep, not awake. The other person’s voice rings inside the dream, and she can’t tell which side she’s on. 「깨우지 마 / 아직 반은 / 저쪽에」.

The coat from track five shows up here first — she’s sleeping under it. 「코트 냄새가 / 베개에 옮는다 / 그걸로 충분해 / 그걸로 잠들 수 있어」. And she knows exactly what it’s worth: 「아침에는 사라진다 / 알고 있지만」.

The bridge is the whole song’s thesis: 「반은 깨어 있어 / 반은 없어 / 그 정도가 / 딱 좋아」. Being fully present would mean facing it. Half is survivable.

Sound notes

The lead vocal is layered and one of those layers is played backwards. The whole arrangement is blurred with a low-pass, and the snaps are pushed down to brushes. The least defined track on the album, deliberately.

One line

どっちも 同じ / どっちも あなた — both are the same / both are you

Dream or room, it doesn’t matter — the answer is the same person either way. The album’s most tender line, delivered half-conscious.
