The scene
A caregiver’s chair was never built for sleeping. This is someone so used to the machine’s tone that when the sound changes, their heart notices first. The ears stay more awake than the body. They mustn’t sleep and they want to sleep, and that’s what they’re most sorry for — one to two goes by in a blink, three to four is the longest hour there is.
