Original

English translation

Midnight. Still awake.

Tonight you woke up three times

the last time, I walked the room holding you

the exact right rhythm for patting your back

my body memorized before I did

That one second lowering you down is terrifying

I hold my breath and let go

and leave the room on tiptoe

finally, it's quiet

I sit in the kitchen without the lights

the ceiling lamp stays off again today

just the small glow above the stove

Cold rice left sitting in the cooker

warming it would chime the end of this

so I eat it cold, as it is

whether it tastes good, I couldn't say

Finally, it's quiet

whose hour is this, anyway

the longer I sit, the less I know

I know I should be sleeping

I know — and I stay in the chair

tomorrow the same day comes

woken at the same hour

walking the same road home

Finally, it's quiet

count through the whole of a day

and the hour when nobody calls my name

is probably only here

that's why I refuse to sleep

it's not that sleep feels wasted

I just can't give up the hour no one calls for me

wondering if that makes me a terrible mother

Finally, it's quiet

a small sound from the bedroom

instantly I hold my breath

just you turning over — that was all

something near my chest aches a little

Outside the window it's gotten slightly light

soon the voice will call for me again

even so, for just a little longer

this hour is still mine alone
